Last year, the government announced an <\/span>extension<\/span><\/a> to the car sales and service tax (SST) exemption on all passenger vehicles. As Part of the Malaysian government\u2019s Penjana programme, this extension aims to spur the local economy after the cooling effects of lockdown and runs until the 30th of June 2022. The SST exemption covers all private vehicles, including SUVs and MPVs, but not trucks that are considered commercial vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n

8th June 2022<\/h2>\n

Last month, the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said\u00a0it had appealed\u00a0to the finance ministry to\u00a0extend the SST exemption, but said it had not received any feedback on the matter.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Star<\/a> reports that Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong said that an extension of the SST would be beneficial for the automotive industry. He also said that the Finance Ministry will be the one to make the final decision based on financial considerations.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will discuss this when I meet (Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz) soon. As the Transport Minister, I feel the exemption scheme has been a boon for businesses and car dealers. They were able to maintain their businesses and did not have to resort to getting rid of workers.<\/p>\n

20th June 2022<\/h2>\n

The government also has announced that SST Exemptions will not be extended<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, the government has noted the stock issues in the automotive industry caused by chip shortages, war, and the pandemic\u00a0and allowed the exemption to remain for any cars booked before the deadline and registered before March 2023.<\/p>\n

As such, although many car buyers will have to wait for months before receiving their car, they will still enjoy the SST exemption so long as the car was booked before 30th June 2022. It is still unclear if cars that are pre-booked before 30th June 2022 will receive the exemption.<\/p>\n

As of now, there are 264,000 undelivered bookings according to the MOF.<\/p>\n
